Virgin Media
Virgin Media bought ntl:Telewest in 2006 and took over the cable network offering its rebranded selection of digital TV, broadband and home phone - it even added mobile phone contracts into the mix, making it the first to offer a “quadplay” of services, all available as a bundle to save you money.
The digital TV section of Virgin Media supplies digital content via a cable, direct to your TV. Like Sky, they offer different levels of hardware covering a standard digital receiver and a digital TV recorder - the V+ service - that allows customers to record two different channels onto an internal hard drive, while watching another. They also offer on-demand programming.
Virgin Media digital TV packages come in three sizes - M, L and XL. All of them have to be taken as part of a bundle with either home phone or broadband, and prices start from £11 a month for the M package with a basic phone line, up to £125 a month if you want to go for the VIP package with Size:XL digital TV, Sky Sports and Movies, an additional TV outlet and a V+ box, bundled with the Size:XL home phone and broadband packages and a mobile phone.
Why should I get it?
You can mix and match Virgin Media bundles to choose from any of their 2 for £20, 3 for £30 or 4 for £40 bundles allowing you to bundle your services and save money at the same time. Virgin Media is also investing money in its on-demand and scheduled programming so you can expect an even better service to come.
What do I need?
Firstly, you need to live in a cable area. You can do a post-code check on DigitalChoices.co.uk to see if Virgin Media is available where you live. When you sign up, a technician will visit your home to install the cable, V set-top box or V+ box and make sure that everything is running smoothly.
Also, if you don’t live in a Freeview area but have a cable connection you will still be able to watch all the Freeview channels that you get as standard with each package.
How much does it cost?
The cost depends on what services and hardware you choose. If you go for the most basic digital TV package (taken with their phone line) you can keep the cost down to £11 a month. This goes up if you want to bundle it with broadband instead or if you want more channels or the V+ service.
