Virgin Media launches non-cable digital TV

(04-04-07) - Virgin Media has launched a digital terrestrial TV (DTT) service for customers in non-cable areas. (visit www.VirginMedia.com

The new service offers the following via a new set-top box:

  • Over 40 free-to-air TV channels
  • Over 25 digital radio channels
  • A Virgin on-screen TV guide
  • Interactive ‘red button’ content
  • Phone and online customer support
  • Easy installation and low power consumption.

The set-top box is roughly the size of a VHS tape, is available free to Virgin Media non-cable customers with 8Mb broadband and Talk Anytime (at £19.99 per month). Non-cable customers with Virgin Media broadband alone can buy the box for £40.

Chris Eagle, Commercial Manager at DigitalChoices.co.uk is not impressed. He says: “At face value this sounds like an interesting deal. However fundamentally this is a broadband package and a FREEVIEW set to box.”

Chris Eagle added “Virgin Media has missed the opportunity to offer a higher specification set top box with functionality such as a digital video recorder or the option of downloading movies or music videos via their Virgin broadband connection.”

Philip Snalune, Managing Director of non-cable at Virgin Media, said: “Launching a basic TV service into non-cable areas enables us to expand availability of our quadplay of broadband, phone, mobile and TV. This is just the first step and our aim is to offer more advanced TV services across the UK throughout 2008.”
