Another million homes go digital as switchover gathers pace
(20-03-07) - Over 1 million more homes converted their TV signals to digital at the end of 2006, Ofcom has revealed.
This follows a rise of 0.8 million in the previous quarter. A total of 77.2% of UK households now receive digital signals on their main TV set. Ofcom has estimated that this equates to 19.55 million homes.
Of those households with digital TV by the end of 2006, 7.7 million had digital terrestrial-only channels, 0.82 million had free-to-view digital satellite services, 7.975 million were Sky subscribers, 3.01m took digital cable, and 43,000 subscribed to the Tiscali ‘TV over ADSL’ service previously known as Homechoice.
How does this affect me?
Chris Eagle, Commercial Manager at Digital Choices, says “The success of digital TV is great news for the consumer, as there is so much choice out there. This means that, if you shop around for a good service, you can really benefit from a competitive market.”
This news was released by Ofcom as the UK digital switchover gathered pace. The first digital switchover date was announced on Thursday, with about 25,000 households in the Whitehaven area of Western Cumbria set to have their analogue signal switched off on October 17th. BBC Two will be the first channel switched off, with the rest following on November 14th.
