Tiscali TV
As the pioneers of video on demand and TV over broadband, Tiscali TV (formerly HomeChoice) offers consumers a triple play of products, bundling high-speed broadband, home telephone and digital TV, all through their phone line.
The past year has seen the broadband television market expand rapidly, with many new players getting in on the action, but HomeChoice (now Tiscali TV) has been around for a while.
Internet Protocol TV (IPTV), to give TV over broadband its proper name, was slow to pick up, and with only 45,000 customers - far less than expected - HomeChoice coverage was limited to London. Tiscali is now aiming to boost sales as TV over broadband becomes more popular ahead of the Digital Switchover. When it bought HomeChoice, Tiscali announced that it expected 500,000 of its broadband customers to sign up to the rebranded broadband TV service.
Why should I get it?
If you live in an area where Tiscali has unbundled exchanges and offers digital TV, you can get the two services, plus a home phone and line rental for a total price of £19.99
Tiscali TV offers digital TV, video on demand and a variety of packages covering off more than 80 channels and over 1,000 pay-per-view movies. Customers also get Sky's basic channels - including Sky One - famously lost by Virgin Media in 2007.
It’s great for music TV lovers, with its award winning V:MX music channels that allow viewers access to more than 4,000 music videos that they can skip and repeat, or even create their own playlists.
Customers who sign up to the Kids TV Pack will receive a unique Minimote - a remote control designed just for children, it’s pre-programmed to only allow them access to children’s programmes.
Tiscali can also install a Homeplug at your property that connects devices in your home without the need of wireless broadband. This is particularly useful for people with extra thick walls or steel obstacles that degrade wireless signals.
What do I need?
At the moment, Tiscali TV is available only to a very limited portion of the country, which is why it isn’t included in some of our guides. However, as soon as Tiscali is ready to rollout its rebranded digital TV service, we’ll update all the information on our site. When you sign up, a Tiscali engineer will visit your home to install the necessary hardware, which will allow you to record any programming that isn’t part of its on-demand service.
How much does it cost?
Packages and bundles start at £14.99 a month and you can then add on extras from £5 a month up to £15.99 a month. You can mix and match which packages you want to subscribe to, from their PictureBox package showing up to 28 movies a month, to the V:MX Music Pack or even Sony TV Asia. There are also online offers available to save you money. Their video on demand service charges £3.49 for new releases, £1.99 for others, on a 24-hour rental basis.
