What is Sky digital TV?

Sky supplies digital TV through a satellite dish attached to the outside of your home. It offers different levels of hardware as well as different package subscriptions, so you can choose from normal Sky TV, Sky+ or Sky+HD.

Sky TV is the standard digital package, and Sky+ provides you with a digital TV recorder with a built-in hard drive memory for recording, rewinding and pausing “live” television. Sky+HD allows you to watch their selection of high definition channels with a sharper, clearer picture, as well as all the functioning of the Sky+ box.

Sky offers a selection of “packs”, and the cost of the package depends on the number of packs you choose. It costs £17.50 a month for one pack, going up by £1 for each additional pack you add. You can then add on Sky’s sports and film packs for additional costs.

Why should I get Sky digital TV?

With Sky digital TV you can build your own tailor-made package from a choice of six "packs" – Children’s, Knowledge, Music, Variety, Style & Culture, and News. So you can sign up for what you want without having to pay for what you don’t want. You can also include the Sport and Movie packs at an additional cost, so you get a choice of channels, including Sky One, Living, National Geographic, the Disney Channel and Sky News, Sports and Movies.

What do I need for digital Sky TV?

Because Sky uses satellite technology, 98% of the country can receive Sky. This means that if you live in a rural area that isn’t yet covered by Freeview, you can still watch these channels as part of your Sky TV package.

When you sign up, an engineer will visit your home to install your Sky dish and connect your TV to the Sky box, Sky+ box or Sky HD box, depending on which service you sign up to.

It’s important to note that listed properties will need planning permission before Sky can be installed, and this may not always be possible.

How much does it cost?

The costs vary depending on how many packs you want and whether or not you want to add on the Movie or Sport packs. Another factor that affects costs is the hardware you go for. Sky+ and Sky+HD are both more expensive than standard Sky TV.

I recently applied to your local Sky outlet, in answer to your extensive advertisement for the Sky Plus box and the fitting of my existing box resited to another room. The Plus Box was FREE until 23,07.09. I was told this Offer was only for New Customers. Iam advised by an Aerial Fitter in Bedfordshire that I was advised wrongly at my local Sky outlet. I wanted a second card in order to view different programmes. Comment please. - Aug 3 2009 6:27PM
