Everyone’s talking about Boardwalk Empire, the new award-winning HBO drama on Sky Atlantic HD. If you want to catch it, our guide gives you the low-down on where to watch it.

Boardwalk Empire is the newest HBO show to hit UK TV screens, starring Con Air’s Steve Buscemi and directed by Oscar-winning film legend Martin Scorsese.

The series is being broadcast in Britain on Sky’s new channel, Sky Atlantic, in standard and high-definition (HD). So how you can get Sky Atlantic and watch the latest episode of Boardwalk Empire

Boardwalk Empire: what’s it about?

Boardwalk Empire made a huge splash across the pond when it first premiered in the US in September 2010. Now showing in the UK on Sky Atlantic, it’s the HBO series that everyone’s talking about.

Boardwalk Empire tells the infamous tale of Atlantic City in the Prohibition era

The period drama series is based on the book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson. Telling the infamous tale of the gambling mecca’s origins during the Prohibition era, the show is centred around the life of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Buscemi), a politician who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City in the 1920s and 30s.

Martin Scorsese directed the first episode, winning the Directors Guild Award for “Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series”. The episode was also the most expensive pilot ever produced, with a price tag of $18million.

The rest of the series was written by Terence Winters of The Sopranos fame, and produced by Entourage pair Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson - two other popular HBO shows on Sky Atlantic.

What channel is Boardwalk Empire on?

Boardwalk Empire is exclusive to Sky (www.sky.co.uk), showing on the satellite TV giant’s new channel, Sky Atlantic.

The channel is now home to some of HBO’s biggest series, including The Sopranos, Mad Men and Six Feet Under, following a deal between Sky and the American TV production company.

Sky Atlantic, which launched on 1 February, is only available to Sky TV customers. So, if you’re a Virgin Media, BT Vision or Freeview home, and a fan of the high-quality drama shown on the channel, it is worth considering a switch to Sky.

When is Boardwalk Empire on?

Each new episode of Boardwalk Empire is first shown on Saturday night at 9pm, on Sky Atlantic and Sky Atlantic HD - the high-definition simulcast of Sky Atlantic.

If you miss the latest episode, and you weren’t canny enough to put the series on record with your Sky+HD box, Sky shows repeats on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays.

For customers that take an all-in-one Sky TV, phone and broadband package, you can also watch new and past episodes of Boardwalk Empire on Sky Anytime+ - the on-demand TV catch-up service from Sky.

And, for Sky customers who are always on the go, set-up your laptop, tablet or smartphone with the Sky Player application. Just log in using your Sky customer ID and your password, and you’ll have access to over 1,000 hours of on-demand and catch-up TV (available content will depend on your Sky subscription), including Boardwalk Empire.

Choosing a digital TV package

If you want to watch Boardwalk Empire, you’ll need a subscription TV package from Sky. Signing up for a Sky TV package will get you access to all the shows on Sky Atlantic, as well as a whole load of other channels, in either standard or high-definition (HD).

Sky may not necessarily be the best TV option for you though; you may find that getting a package from Virgin Media or BT Vision is more suitable. You can compare prices using the Digitalchoices.co.uk postcode checker, and then sign-up online for the best deal.

If you do want to watch Boardwalk Empire and you opt for another digital TV provider, you’ll have to wait for the boxset unfortunately.
