First, you'll need to choose between a free-to-view service and a subscription service such as Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com) or Sky (www.sky.com). Use our digital TV price comparison service for packages and prices available in your area.
If you join Sky or Virgin Media, you could get a free HD set-top box, with play-back options and more - pause, rewind and record live TV plus much more. If you choose a free-to-view provider, such as Freeview or Freesat, you will need to buy a HD TV receiver upfront
You'll also need a HD ready TV. Check the front of your TV or the manual for a small sign reading "HD Ready". The logo you'll be looking for is the one at the top of this page. High definition TVs vary in price, starting from around £250 for a 32in set.
Last but not least, you will need a HDMI cable to connect your set-top box and TV. HDMI cables cost as little as £10 from most retailers.
