Nature documentaries are set to get a lot more up close and personal as Sky hires Sir David Attenborough to present a dinosaur documentary in 3D.
Satellite TV giant Sky (www.sky.co.uk) has commissioned award-winning naturalist Sir David Attenborough to be the face of its first 3D documentary - Flying Monsters 3D.
The documentary will bring the flying dinosaurs Pterosaurs to life almost 200 million years after they became extinct, and will be first shown in IMAX and other 3D cinemas, and then premiere on Sky 3D later in the year.
Attenborough, whose catalogue of nature hits include Walking with Dinosaurs and Planet Earth, said: “Having learned my television skills in the days of black and white, and been involved with the introduction of colour, I’m thrilled to be part of one of the first 3D television projects.”
He added: “3D is a wonderful way of seeing the world as the Pterosaurs did, and it’s to Sky’s credit that they’ve taken on the challenge to be the first to broadcast in 3D.”
Sky kicked off its 3D TV channel with the Premier League clash between Man United and Chelsea in about 1,000 pubs on 3 April, and plans to offer the channel to its home subscribers later in year.
Jon Ingram, operations director at Digitalchoices.co.uk, said: “As a big fan of Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Beasts, I can’t wait to see the first 3D documentary - dinosaurs are a great choice of subject, and the programme is destined to entertain the whole family.”
He added: “And after the recent box office success of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, I’m sure many homes will be thinking of switching to 3D soon.”
