Virgin Media to offer TiVo boxes by end of 2010

Virgin Media will offer its cable customers a way to revolutionise their TV schedules with the launch of TiVo-enabled set-top boxes later this year.

Cable TV giant Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com) and US digital video recorder giant TiVo will unleash their next-generation set-top boxe this year.

Virgin Media and TiVo revealed their tie-up at the end of November last year. At a cable TV conference last week, Virgin Media boss Neil Berkett said the boxes would be deployed before the end of the year.

The digital TV provider will allow users to select their favourite programmes from an easier to navigate on-demand platform, making for a better viewing experience than the current Virgin Media set-top box.

Berkett said: “TiVo will supply the best user experience, Flash-based, and creating a new gateway to the digital world.”

The new set-top boxes will also bring TV and broadband together, to offer a faster video-on-demand service and an all-round better viewing experience, as well as letting customers view shows hosted on the internet, on platforms such as the BBC iPlayer and 4oD.
