New three-part David Attenborough series about the Galapagos Islands to screen on Sky 3D in late-2012.
Sir David Attenborough is to team up with Sky on a fourth 3D project that will air on Sky 3D next year.
Galapagos 3D will be a three-part natural history series, written and presented by the celebrated broadcaster and naturalist, about the biologically unique Ecuadorian islands.
Sir David said: “Galapagos is one of the most wonderful places in the world. There are extraordinary creatures living there that live nowhere else - a whole slew of marvellous animals.”
He explained that, because the islands remained isolated until relatively recently, the animals there are not afraid of humans, meaning the series could be filmed in 3D while walking among them.
“They continue behaving in just the way that they would do naturally. Galapagos is full of drama, full of charismatic creatures which you can film; it is a natural for 3D.”
The project is the first to be produced by Colossus Productions - the company formed by Sky and television production company Atlantic Productions this summer to develop original 3D programmes with UK homes that subscribe to Sky 3D in mind.
Anthony Geffen, executive producer, CEO of Atlantic Productions and co-founder of Colossus Productions, said that Galapagos 3D will “involve micro and macro filming on location and state-of-the art 3D visual effects which will peel away the Earth’s surface and shed light on the hidden forces that have built and shaped the islands”.
The series follows Sir David’s previous 3D projects - the BAFTA-winning Flying Monsters, a documentary about the winged dinosaurs pterosaurs; The Bachelor King 3D, a film about the life of a king penguin, due to be screened on Sky 3D on New Year’s Eve; and Kingdom of Plants 3D, a series based at Kew Gardens, which will air on Sky 3D next year.
