More households now have Sky’s digital video recorder service than have cats, dogs or children.

This month marks 10 years since Sky launched its digital video recorder service, Sky+.

People now watch more TV from their Sky+ planner than any channel

Over 8.1 million homes now have Sky+ - that’s more than have cats, dogs or even children, according to the satellite TV provider.

The service, which allows users to remotely record their favourite TV shows and watch them when they want, is now used more than 35 million times a day, which equates to one billion times a month.

Hilary Perchard, director for product management at Sky, said that Sky+ “has become integral to everyday life” and that the company is “constantly updating and bettering the service in line with consumer trends”.

Because Sky+ allows users to pause and rewind as well as record their favourite TV programmes, people now watch more TV from their Sky+ planner than via any other TV channel Sky offers.

Movies, documentaries and drama are the types of TV most often watched through Sky+, and Sky now offers its customers the Sky+HD 1TB box, allowing them to record up to 240 hours of high-definition (HD) or 740 hours of standard-definition TV.

The company launched the Sky+ Remote Record application for the Apple iPhone in 2009, enabling iPhone users to record what they wanted wherever they were, while apps for the iPad and Android smartphones arrived last year.

You can also text your Sky+ box when you want it to record a programme, or log in online to set up schedules for your favourite shows.
