More than 80% of the UK now has access to digital TV (DTV) at home, with Freeview overtaking Sky as the main provider.

Ofcom’s Digital Television Progress Report for the first quarter of 2007 showed that household take-up of digital television rose to over 20.4 million homes.

Digital terrestrial TV, or Freeview, accounted for a staggering 81% of the growth between January and March this year.

Chris Eagle, commercial manager at DigitalChoices.co.uk said: “The Government’s digital rollout is not set to begin until next year but if figures continue to rise at this rate there will be only a small percentage of homes in need of switching over.

“It’s great to see this market growing so well and we hope that with so many people already using DTV, the inevitable teething problems of the switchover will be minimised.”
