Channel 4 will begin broadcasting 3D programmes this autumn, offering viewers a selection of new and vintage content.
Channel 4 has beaten satellite TV giant Sky to 3D television, and will be trialling 3D programmes this autumn using ColorCode technology.
This autumn’s 3D line-up includes The Greatest Ever 3D Moments and illusionist Derren Brown’s 3D Magic Spectacular. The Queen’s 1953 coronation will also be aired in 3D in a two-part series.
David Glover, Channel 4’s science commissioner, said: “Viewers can watch as the crowds wave at the Coronation and see the young Queen walking right past them. Watching period 3D documentary footage is about as close to time travel as you can get.”
The terrestrial channel, which also runs the 4oD online catch-up service, has said if the prime-time 3D shows in the autumn prove popular, the technology could become a regular feature.
To watch programmes in 3D, viewers will need a pair of 3D glasses. These will be available free from 500 Sainsbury’s stores around the country.
Sky customers will also be able to watch programmes in 3D early next year on its new 3D channel. Sky’s +HD box is already 3D ready, but customers will need to buy a new 3D-ready TV to watch Sky’s 3D channels.
Brian Sullivan, managing director of Sky’s customer group, said: “3D is a genuinely ‘seeing is believing’ experience, making TV come to life as never before. Just like the launch of digital, Sky+ and HD, this is latest step in our commitment to innovating for customers.”
