BT Vision launches 3D on-demand

BT Vision customers will soon be able to watch 3D movies on-demand, with the supplier’s new 3D Vision service.

BT Vision (www.btvision.bt.com) has signed a deal with NBC Universal to show all of the 3D movies that the studio releases over the next 12 months, starting with Step Up 3D from 29 November and Despicable Me in March next year.

Customers will also be able to watch StreetDance, the first British film to be shot in 3D, featuring Diversity, winners of Britain's Got Talent 2009.

Marc Watson, chief executive of BT Vision, said: “We already have an extensive catalogue of more than 500 movies in the UK courtesy of our long-term deals with major Hollywood studios and independents.

“Now Vision viewers can experience films at home in fantastic 3D, thanks to these new deals. This is just the start of 3D on Vision - viewers can expect to hear much more from us in the coming months.”

3D movies will cost £5.99 to rent using BT Vision’s on-demand service.

Digital TV rivals Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com) and Sky (www.sky.co.uk) both launched their own 3D offerings in September and October.

Virgin Media is offering on-demand 3D movies like BT, but Sky World customers can watch Europe’s first dedicated 3D channel, offering movies, sports and documentaries and the arts in 3D.

“In order to watch 3D TV from any of these providers, you need a 3D ready television set and some glasses too,” said Jon Ingram, operations director at Digitalchoices.co.uk

“High street retailer like John Lewis, Argos and Currys are already selling 3D TVs, which range from around £1,000 to more than £6,000,” he added, “but prices are falling as more models are released.”
