How to find new Freeview channels

Updated: Wednesday 30 September, 2009

New channels are constantly being added to the Freeview (www.freeview.co.uk) service, but your set-top box or integrated TV might not automatically pick them up. Some hardware does rescan automatically while others have to be done manually.

Rescanning is really simple and a great way to check for new channels. You can do it as often as you like, and you may find lots of new channels the more regularly you do it.

Freeview recommends that you check with your manufacturer to find out if your hardware will rescan automatically. If not, you can follow the simple step-by-step instructions below:

Rescanning a set-top box

Press “menu” on your remote control, and follow the on-screen instructions. You will also find instructions in your user manual, but it should be as follows:

  1. Press “menu” on your remote control
  2. From the on-screen options, select “tuning menu” - sometimes called "installtion" or "default settings"
  3. Select “update” to rescan. This might also be referred to as “auto setup,” “retune,” “replace” or “store channels.”

Retuning an integrated digital TV

Press “menu” on your remote control, and follow the on-screen instructions. You will also find instructions in your user manual, but it should be as follows:

  1. Press “menu” on your remote control
  2. From the on-screen options select “tuning menu”
  3. Select “auto set-up” or “update.” You will get a pop-up message saying something like "warning - all current tuning data will be altered.” Ignore this.
  4. Select “yes” to start the updating process. This may take up to 10 minutes.

There have been some problems reported when retuning integrated digital TVs. Freeview recommends that if you do experience difficulties retuning, you should either switch over to another digital channel and then back to the one you’re trying to receive, or retune again.

If you continue to have problems, contact your TV or set-top box manufacturer.

I am suddenly receiving very weak digital signals from all ITV channels, 4, 5, and more 4. All other channels are fine, as is all analogue channels. I have tried your advice of switching off and disconnecting then retuning etc but to no avail. I use a Sony set top box. - Nov 18 2011 4:56PM

I haven't used my 2nd tv to actually watch tv for over a yr & now I can only receive 10 tv channels (mainly BBC) & 11 radio channels. I have tried to auto retune without any success as it still only finds the same ones. I haven't got any ITV or other independent channels. My tv has built in Freeview & has an internal ariel has my main tv is on Sky via a satellite dish. I am considering manuallly retuning but don't know which channels are which i.e. programme numbers. I used to get all the available Freeview channels on this tv. - May 9 2011 8:04PM

I have moved my digital tv Goodmans model Ld2255d into another room, it was previously connected via a digilogic box. I have had a new ariel and it is now plugged direct into my tv - it did work - but now it will not go into the DTV menu I can not rescan it and can only get analogue channels. - Oct 17 2010 6:01PM
I have a usb digital tv tuner capable of hd reception which I use with WindowsMedia Center software. I beleive in order to receive hd channels I have manually 'Add missing channels', which involves providing a channel frequency. Can you advise where channel frequencies for digital channels are published? Thanks - Sep 28 2010 8:54PM
