Sky1 is hard to beat if you’re looking for top entertainment, drama and comedy. As one of the most popular and well-established pay-TV channels on offer, Sky1 is at the forefront of UK television.

The channel is available to all consumers with either Sky or Virgin Media TV services, so if you’re a Freeview household, read on to find out whether a subscription TV package with Sky1 would suit you more.

What is Sky1?

Sky1 is the flagship channel from Sky (www.sky.co.uk), Britain’s largest satellite TV provider. It’s been on air since 1982, and has broadcast some of the nation’s best-loved American shows, including 24, Glee and The Simpsons, as well as British series such as An Idiot Abroad and Soccer AM.

The channel is available in both standard and high-definition (HD), with the HD simulcast, showing the same programmes but with clearer, brighter images and sharper 5.1 Dolby surround sound.

Broadcasting the most popular British and American drama and comedy series of recent years, other Sky1 highlights include:

• An Idiot Abroad - Follow “idiot” Karl Pilkington’s journey across the world as he’s put to the test by comic duo Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
• Futurama - The animated sci-fi comedy from The Simpsons creator Matt Groening based around a pizza delivery boy who gets frozen in 1999 and thawed in the year 3000.
• Glee - An all-singing, all-dancing comedy-drama series about a US high school musical group that’s proved so popular its single-handedly restored the band Journey to popular consciousness.
• Got To Dance - If you don’t know your bhangra from your ballet or sissy bounce from your salsa, tune in for Davina McCall’s Got To Dance - a reality TV show with a toe-tapping twist .
• House - The award-winning series House stars Hugh Laurie as an anti-social maverick doctor specialising in diagnostic medicine, working with a team to cure America’s sickliest patients.
• Mad Dogs - Exclusive to Sky1, Mad Dogs is a series that mixes black comedy with a psychological tale of murder and deception, starring Max Beesley, Philip Glenister, John Simm and Marc Warren.
• The Simpsons - Everyone’s favourite cartoon family, The Simpsons, have been a mainstay of Sky1 since the early 1990s.

How to get Sky1

Sky1 is available in standard-definition to all Sky TV customers taking either the Sky Entertainment pack or the Sky Extra pack.

If you’re looking for the HD version of the channel, you’ll have to also take the Sky HD pack for an additional monthly fee on top of your standard Sky subscription.

All Virgin Media (www.virginmedia.com) customers that subscribe to the providers cable TV package can also get Sky1 in standard-definition. Those that subscribe to the XL television package can also get the HD simulcast of Sky1 as long as they have a V+HD or V HD box set-top box.
